Sankofa Scholarships

(4-10 students annually, for Griot Company Alumni)

The Sankofa Scholarship supports graduating Marin County students pursuing higher education at a 2-year or 4-year college or university. Rooted in the Sankofa principle – learning from the past to build the future – this scholarship invests in students who demonstrate academic commitment, leadership, community engagement, and a vision for creating positive change.

A total of $10,000 will be awarded annually and distributed among 4 – 10 students. Applicants must successfully complete the application and interview process and provide proof of enrollment in a 2-year or 4-year institution before funds are awarded.

The Will of Reggie Award

(1 x $1000 award annually)

The Will of Reggie Award honors the legacy of Reggie Williams, a beloved community member and active force within Griot Theater Company. Reggie embodied creativity, perseverance, leadership, and service, and this award continues his spirit by investing in emerging young leaders and artists.

The award will be granted annually to one Marin County youth or young adult, ages 14 – 30, who demonstrates excellence and promise in theater-making, entrepreneurship, education, or community leadership. Funding may be used to support participation in a class, workshop, artistic opportunity, or educational experience, or to launch a new business or creative venture.

Applicants, or individuals nominating a candidate, must successfully complete the application process to be considered.

For Applicants Under 18 Years of Age

Golden Gate Village Youth Grants

(5-10 applicants from $100-$500)

The Golden Gate Village Youth Grants are designed to empower young people ages 13 – 25 in pursuing artistic, entrepreneurial, and educational dreams. This grant uplifts youth voice, creativity, leadership, and innovation while providing direct financial support and mentorship opportunities.

Grant recipients may use funding for projects, programs, training, business ideas, artistic development, educational advancement, or community-centered initiatives. In addition to receiving financial support, awardees will be paired with a mentor from Griot Theater Company to guide and encourage their growth throughout the grant cycle.

Recipients will also participate in a culminating community share-out, where they will present their work, reflect on their journey, and inspire others through their accomplishments.

Note: Video submissions (1-3 minutes) are accepted for youths aged 13-16 in place of written answers.
