LeShawn Holcomb
Executive / Artistic Director
LeShawn Holcomb is the Executive/Artistic Director of The Griot Theater Company, a unique intergenerational organization he co-founded to create a safe space for students of color to explore their cultural identity through the arts.
The Origin of Griot
In 2019, while working as an English teacher in the Sausalito Marin City School District during a period of mandated desegregation, LeShawn recognized the profound need for a dedicated space for artistic and cultural expression for students of color. He partnered with close friends Mizuho Shiomi and Maurice Tobin to establish The Griot Theater Company. Named after the West African storytellers who are the keepers of oral tradition, The Griot Theater Company is more than a theater—it’s a community dedicated to amplifying Black and Brown voices.
Leadership & Artistic Vision
As Executive/Artistic Director, LeShawn is the driving force behind the company’s vision and operations. He oversees all productions, programs, and community engagement, and was instrumental in evolving the company from a youth-focused group into an intergenerational organization. This shift allows for a powerful exchange of knowledge, with the wisdom of adults enriching the energy of youth, fostering a dynamic and inclusive artistic community.
Global & Community Impact
LeShawn’s commitment to the arts and his community extends far beyond the stage. In 2024, he led a transformative intergenerational trip to New York City, where 28 company members performed at the legendary Apollo Theater and experienced Broadway productions. This journey to a global stage helped solidify the company’s standing as a serious and impactful organization. His dedication also extends internationally, with a recent trip to Ghana for impactful workshops that directly support fundraising efforts for disadvantaged children in the region.
